BEST, GREATEST..KIDS PLAYGROUND MENTALITY: ""ENJOY THEM ALL, WHILE THEY STILL LIVE", &^ "HONOR" THOSE MANY WHO HAVE DIED TOO EARLY"(IMO))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Not in my book. The greatest Layla ever played was when Duane Allman played with Eric Clapton on Derek and the Dominos, What about the high riffs Duane played. Not the best ever.Duane plaed and composed the riffs. The greatest guitar player bar none. Quickwater.
+Steelasophical Steel Band The Bass-MASTER!!! He's the guy called first by the legends and came up with the bass-line for "Footloose." If anyone listens to that then you'll understand why he's first called. He's amazing!
+MsFancy Pants thank U 4 your reply. I did do that. The ones that came up were not good audio at all. I'll look some more. But I just can't find any version that sounds as great as this. I think this version is perfection :) Just my personal opinion!
+donna stitz No it isn't very good audio if you are referring to the one recorded in Tampa Fl...back in the 70 not why some asshole didn't get it on film would have been GREAT!!!!...oh and as far as I know that is the only live version of it with Duane. I'm sure there are others but not with him ...THATS THE BUMMER and that it isn't on film. :-(
Liked this one well enough, hated the slower version he insisted on doing forever after, and still like the studio version of this one, the best. Just a personal preference.
Johnny Yum, you are so right. Without Duane Allman who created and played on Derek and The Dominos Boxed set circa 1971, is the best recording of Layla. The book in the boxed set states that Eric Clapton stated Duane created all the high riffs and plays the hell out of them. They were very good friends until Duane died. Listen also to Key to the Highway and you can hear Clapton yell on three occassions. it is rumored that they had another album planned with Duane but the cards played out different and Clapton slipped into his Heroin addiction for years. Quickwater., Duane's masterly guitar playing put Clapton in his place.
Some people say that Jimmy Hendrix is the best player ever. Many of us claim that Eric Clapton is the best! They are both extremely talented artists and I for one don't want to compare apples to oranges. Both have unique styles and I prefer Eric Clapton's style. However I wound never give up an opportunity to go to the past and listen to the late/great Jimmy Hendrix.
+Jim Reasoner I agree......I totally GET the great amazing talent of Jimmy Hendrix. But It's apples & oranges. I prefer Eric Clapton as the greatest lead player of all times. Also I can't leave out George Harrison , Keith Richards, & of course , Chuck Berry !!!!!!!!
I don't know. The musicianship is just too tight on this performance. Layla is a whirlwind of a song, and this performance just has no wind behind it.
+Miser Jones there are points where the sax is just tooo..... i dunno...cliche? trite? ....and there are other parts where the sax adds to it... in general, whenever i hear this song I wish the piano section went on....well pretty much to eternity...i get lost in it and transported...
Clapton at his best. Or shall I say the 5th Beatle. Using his favorite Gibson Les Paul. Actual guitar was a 2-pickup.. He only used one pickup though.
This tune misses Duane Allman nuff said. Where are the high riffs? Duane created all the riffs as stated in the old Box set of Derek and The Dominos. He is sorely missed and Clapton cannot make those riffs magically appear. Quickwater
He was like, "oh shit- OH HELL YEAH!"
so smooth!!Love the piano...
